NAMM invites pianists from across the country to join Roomful of Pianos, a new annual event featuring spectacular multiple piano music taking place on Jan. 25-27, 2018 in Anaheim, California.
Roomful of Pianos will take place at The NAMM Show in Anaheim, California on January 25, 26, and 27, 2018. Pianists may sign up to perform for one, two, or all three nights, depending on your ability and availability.
We will notify applicants on a rolling basis, usually within a week, and provide you with an official acceptance letter. Once the spaces for an evening are filled, we will remove that evening from the form below.
Roomful of Pianos will feature six short pieces over three nights.
First night: Duke Ellington, “Come Sunday” (arr. Keith McCutchen) and Leonard Bernstein, “Mambo” from Symphonic Dances from West Side Story (arr. John Musto)
Very advanced, rhythmically confident pianists are invited to sign up for the first night. Ten pianists will be selected. Note that the sheet music will only be available to players 3 weeks in advance, on January 1st. Each piece is about 5 minutes long.
Second night: Emmanuel Chabrier, España and Richard Wagner, Ride of the Valkyries (arr. Richard Blackford)
Advanced pianists (at the level of an undergraduate piano major or above) are invited to sign up for the second night. Twenty pianists will be selected. We will distribute the sheet music in mid-December. España is 7 minutes long; the Ride of the Valkyries is 5 minutes.
Third night: Gustav Holst, The Planets: Jupiter (arr. Greg Anderson) and John Philip Sousa, Stars and Stripes Forever (arr. Morton Gould)
Advanced pianists (at the level of an undergraduate piano major or above) are invited to sign up for the third night. Approximately fifty pianists will be selected. We will distribute the sheet music by December 1st. Each piece is about 5 minutes long. This evening will be followed by a cocktail reception where Schubert 4-hands arrangements will be provided, so those who wish can sight-read with each other.
Each program is preceded by a mandatory 2-hour rehearsal the day before, where you will get comfortable with your instrument and the space, meet the conductors, and rehearse with the full group. Please do not sign up to perform on a program unless you can commit to the rehearsal, too.
If you are performing on Thursday, you will rehearse on Wednesday from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.
If you are performing on Friday, you will rehearse on Thursday from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.
If you are performing on Saturday, you will rehearse on Friday from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.
The NAMM Show is one of the world’s biggest music trade shows, attended by over 100,000 music industry figures each year. This year’s show will take over the Anaheim Convention Center (across the street from Disneyland), and three nearby hotels, a space larger than 27 football fields. It can take days to explore all of the instruments, gear, and performances on offer.
Normally, attendance is restricted to NAMM Members, but non-members who participate in Roomful of Pianos may attend by registering for a special badge that gives full access to all four days of the show, from Thursday through Sunday. Click here for registration details.
Pianists will be responsible for their own accommodations and travel arrangements. NAMM will provide access to its nonmember housing block, and will put pianists in touch with each other in advance to facilitate carpooling.
